Do you have to pay for someone personal belonging if they were irresponsible with it?

So the other day Im driving to my friends house to pick up my stuff and im in a rush. A bunch of kids were sitting in his driveway so I honk the horn and tell them to move they all get up and the path is clear so I drive through, but when I was driving through one of the kids forget to pick up there friends backpack which contained a laptop. Long story short I break the thing and now the kid expects me to pay for his laptop which I believe shouldn't have been on the ground in the first place. So do I have to pay this guy for his irresponsibility?
