So I am a guy and I havethis guy friend. That I guess befriended. I need help how to approach his weirdness.?

Ok so I guess I kinda befriended this guy in my p.e. class. And I have alot of fun with him. But he is looking for this Best friend. And I am just wanting a new friend. Anyways he is so weird on friendship. Ok so he calls me his p.e. buddy and he has had a p.e. buddy for every semester for p.e. Anyways he has these to good friends that he has. An asian girl and a White boy. I know them abittle but more with the asain girl. So he really has these high standards for friendships. He told me that I have some qualities he would want as a best friend and his white friend has other qualities asin a best friend. He kinda wants me and the white boys qualities together which is weird. And I made the first move to say hi and actually befriend him. And I gotten to know him and actually hang around with his friends and with him after school. I just don't know how to tell him how much I am trying to be his friend. Because honestly my friends that I have now arn't anywhere compared as him. He is just fun to be around with and not a Jackass. How should I approach him on how I feel. How should I layer this situation out?
